Tinubu Government Spends N3.2trillion In One Year On Security Sector As Kidnapping, Killings of Nigerians Worsen

In the third quarter the 2023 fiscal year, the Defence Ministry received N412 billion, Police Affairs Ministry got N150 billion, the office of the National Security Adviser was paid N31 billion while the Interior Ministry received N64 billion.

Under the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government, a total of N3.2trillion has been injected into the security sector in one year but it has failed to address and end the kidnappings and killings of Nigerians.

In the third quarter the 2023 fiscal year, the Defence Ministry received N412 billion, Police Affairs Ministry got N150 billion, the office of the National Security Adviser was paid N31 billion while the Interior Ministry received N64 billion.

SaharaReporters obtained these details as published on the Open Treasury Portal of the Nigerian government.

In total N657 billion was paid to security in third quarter of 2023.

In the fourth quarter, the Defence Ministry got N487 billion, Police Affairs received N282 billion, the Interior Ministry was paid N119 billion, whole Office of the National Security Adviser received N113 billion.

The total sum of N1 trillion was paid to security agencies and Ministries in the fourth quarter of 2023. This would mean that between the third and fourth quarter of 2023, the sum of N1.657 trillion was paid to security agencies and ministries.

Review of payments made by the Nigerian government shows that between January and June (half year 2024), the sum of N1.032 trillion was paid to the defence ministry, according to data from the Open Treasury Portal.

Another sum of N424 billion was paid to the federal ministry of police affairs while N223 billion was paid to the Office of the National Security adviser.

This totals N1.6 trillion in six months.
Of this amount received in six months, the Nigerian Army got N426 billion, Navy received N140 billion, while Air Force received N121 billion. N13.7 billion was given to the defence intelligence agency.

Between Third Quarter 2023 and Second quarter 2024, the government spent N3.2 trillion for security ministries and agencies.
The federal government is not the only one that incurred expenditures, states have also incurred one form of expenditures or the other.

Plagued by the growing insecurity in the country, states in the Southwestern region of Nigeria, started their own security outfit code named “Amotekun”. In Nigeria, security is on the exclusive list and is normally controlled by the federal government.

While some say that there have been gains from the state security units formation, it has not stopped insecurity from thriving in the region.

The women who protested half naked against kidnapping on their farms, are from Ondo state. The state government spent N3.6 billion on the Amotekun security network group in 27 months, yet many communities in the state suffer from fear of the unknown.

Osun state budgeted to spend N100 million on its own Amotekun in 2024 and already spent N39 million in the first six months of 2024.

Many other states have invested in their own local security unit, with some going as far as having a ministry for internal security, even tho portion of what they spent and what they allocated to spent to the ministry remains central of discussions but the focal points is that they commit some funds to the ministry.

For instance, Katsina state in the North Western region, budgeted N3.4 billion for its internal security ministry capital expenditure for 2024 fiscal year, already it has spent N514 million in the first six months of the year.

Kaduna state also in the Northwestern region of Nigeria budgets to spend N15.4 billion for its internal security ministry for the 2024 fiscal year.
