Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has suspended its planned boycott of the All Progressives Congress (APC) activities, following a letter of ‘Unreserved apology” from the party and a letter of commitment to replace all the damaged items belonging to journalists.
It would be recalled that some journalists in Edo State were physically attacked on February 17, 2024 allegedly by some APC members/supporters while covering the inconclusive primary elections of the party in the state.
During the unprovoked attack, equipment/belongings to the media practitioners were damaged/missing, prompting the NUJ to announce a coverage boycott of its activities.
The decision was to allow the party to replace the damaged items on or before March 16, 2024, in line with the commitment it made to the union.
The decision to suspend the boycott was taken at a “Special a Congress” of the union held on Tuesday at the union’s Press Centre in Benin City, the NUJ said in a statement released by its Secretary, Comrade Andy Egbon.
With this development, according to the statement, the Chairman of the union, Comrade Festus Alenkhe advised journalists in the state to resume coverage of APC activities.
It would also be recalled that after the attack, the union called an emergency congress where a 7-day ultimatum was given to the party to apologize to the union, offset the medical bills of Journalists who sustained injuries during the attack and as well replace all the items belonging to journalists that were damaged/missing.
The ultimatum expired last Sunday.
