The senators rising from its two hours executive session passed the resolution via a motion which was read by the Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.
Resuming from its 30 day recess which began on December 30th last year, the Lawmakers who expressed anger over the rising spate of insecurity in the country also resolved to engage with President Tinubu after they must have met with the security Chiefs over the insecurity scourge.
Expressing their anger the senators via the motion listed the various incidents of kidnappings, killings and series of crimes occurring in the country.
At the Senate plenary presided by the Senate President Godswill Akpabio the motion titled “Motion of the state of insecurity in the Nigerian Nation” lamented how kidnapped victims were killed despite the payment of huge sums of ransoms.sThe Senators also recounted the killings in Benue, Jos and other parts of the country expressing worry over the level of infrastructure and economic losses caused by insecurity.
Part of the motion read;
“People have been killed after the collection of ransoms. The Senate is also aware of several cases of kidnappings all over the country where huge ransoms have been paid and several of the victims still get killed.
“The Senate is also aware that the recent killings and the abduction of an unknown number of pupils of Apostolic Faith School from their school bus in Ekiti state has further admitted the level of insecurity in the state.
“The Senate also notes the unfortunate bomb explosion at Bodija Ibadan ( Oyo State) where not less than five lives were lost and several residential houses , schools , hotels , religious worship centers were destroyed.
“The Senate also notes the killings of several residents in Mangu Bokos and Barkin Ladi communities in Plateau State.
“That the Senate do invoke the earlier resolutions to invite the security Chiefs for an interactive session with the Senate to explain the level of insecurity that is plaguing the country.”
The Senators via voice votes presided by Senate President Akpabio passed the prayers of the motion to invite the security Chiefs, engage President Tinubu and also observed a moment of silence for the victims and security operatives who have lost their lives as result of the insecurity in the nation.
The President of the Senate lamented how kidnappings had become a criminal enterprise in the country where Middle men collect ransoms on behalf of kidnapped victims.
Akpabio announced the decision of the Senate to meet with President Tinubu over the matter. He said: “People have turned into merchandise where middle men are collecting ones on behalf of victims, the Senate has also noted the killings in Plateau.
“We will also fix a time to discuss the situation with Mr. President so that we and our children can sleep without two eyes closed.
“We will take this up with Mr. President after the interaction with all the security Chiefs next week so that we can discuss and see how we can tackle this situation.”
