…Says cultism will reduce if students have hope

By Igbotako Nowinta

Nigerian Professor, Cyrille Ngamen Kouassi, Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies of Glorious Vision University, Ogwa, Edo State, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to use his administration to make Nigerian students to have hope and a sense of belonging.

The Professor of Ethics, Cultural and Political Philosophy, made this call recently when he granted interview to journalists in Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria.

Professor  Kouassi who was reacting to incessant cult related killings on Nigerian campuses, said the ‘highest political leadership in the land should be able to create an atmosphere of genuine justice for the country, make Nigerian students at the ivory towers to have a sense of belonging, create proper learning environment, let government instill confidence on Nigerian people’

According to the renowned researcher:

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should make Nigerian students to have a sense of belonging given the state of things in the country today. The Presidency should push the relevant government agencies in the country vigorously to lay serious emphasis on civic education.

“One of the basic things to be done is proper orientation on patriotism and to profusely teach the youths about the value of productive society and human beings. Wrong education is dangerous; moral decadence is a time bomb”.

The erudite Professor who wrote ‘Introduction to Logic and Critical Thinking and Nigeria Peoples and Cultures’, as course materials for the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), regretted the prevalence of cultism on Nigerian campuses.

His words: “Political leaders should be able to give hope of good jobs to Nigerian students as they prepare to graduate from the Universities. Leaders should be up and doing; they should keep to their election promises so that we can have a fair society.

“Once there is injustice in any sphere of the society anything can happen. Erosion of value system is deadly; show of power and pride, that is why cultism is thriving; you see show of unnecessary power and pride on the streets.

“Nigerian students must seriously be made to have hope within the system. This will go a long way in eradicating cultism on our campuses, so that those planning to join will know that after graduating they can hold on to something positive. Religious leaders should make Nigerian students to understand too that God is the only giver and taker of lives”.
