Group Renews Call For National Conference To Discuss Basis Of Nigeria’s Continued Existence

BY OFURE OSEHOBO

Worried by failure of governance, continuing tension and insecurity of lives and property across the length and breadth of Nigeria, a coalition of concerned citizens known as Conscience Group Nigeria has renewed the call for a conference of Ethnic nationalities.

The group says such a conference will address the failure of the political class, the economy and educational system, which are near collapse, the system of government as well as the basis for the continued existence of the Nigerian state, if at all, or an alternative means of coexistence for all the nationalities.

The group’s position is contained in a communique signed by its Chairman,  Humphrey Areghan, and Secretary, Remi Yusufu, respectively, issued at the end of its recent second quarterly meeting in Benin City, the Edo State Capital.

It condemned the , “continued militarization and creation of ethnic militias”, the widening gap between the rich and poor, and a cosmetic educational system that now only brings out the best of Nigerian child abroad rather than at home.

“The current security architecture and situation in Nigeria has assumed a frightening dimension”, and calls for urgent action to arrest the situation adding that the suspended RUGA project of the Nigerian government is better discarded in its entirety.

The Conscience Group Nigeria also condemned treasonable comments by groups issuing the Nigerian government ultimatum, warning that ,”Nigeria cannot afford another War”.

In conclusion the groups said true federalism, good governance, equity and Justice which are the hallmarks of a true National state can only be entrenched in the country if the future is renegotiated.
