Benin City – Edo Police Command has given contradicting accounts of the gruesome murder of its officers at Afuze Divisional Police Headquarters in Owan East local government area of the state, last month.
The conflicting accounts were noted last week when the state commissioner of police CP Dan Malam Mohammed briefed the press on the achievements of the command between February and April 2019.
The police chief had in the wake of the attack told the press that the attackers did not remove anything from the station after killing the four cops including a pregnant female officer.
“I just returned from Afuze division where four of my operatives including the DPO were killed, nothing including their guns was removed. The inspector’s gun was found by his corpse at the station……”
Few days after the unfortunate incident CP Dan Malam Mohammed told Edo people that 13 suspects had been arrested in connection with Afuze Killings and that they were making confessions.
“We have arrested 13 suspects, majority of them confessed to have participated in the crime,” he stated.
However, during the briefing of last week, the CP made a U-turn and stated emphatically that six suspects were in police custody and they would be paraded before journalists that day.
He further added that one AK-47 rifle, one Berretta pistol and three GSM phones were carted away from the station by the attackers.
“The suspects……. made away with the following: one AK-47 rifle, one Berretta pistol and three GSM phones,”.he remarked.
It would be recalled that four police officers including the DPO were shot to death by gunmen who invaded the Divisional Police Headquarters in Afuze town in Owan East local government area of Edo State on Tuesday March 12, 2019.
