The governor made the call during a meeting with members of Odiguetue Community of Ovia North East Local Government Area, at the Government House, in Benin City, Edo State.
Obaseki, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Chief Taiwo Akerele, assured them that the government has set up structures in place to engender cordial relations among all, as, according to him, the standing committee set up to mediate between farmers and herders is revving peace-building efforts.
“We call for calm and urge the community to maintain good neighbourly relations with herdsmen. The state is committed to ensuring peaceful co-existence among the people.
“We want to assure the people of Odiguetue Community and others that there is a standing committee that is charged with fast-tracking conflict resolution and peace-building in communities across the state.”
According to him they are continually working to maintain peace and order.
The Police, which is part of the committee, he said, will investigate and prosecute anyone found to be constituting nuisance.
“The committee will intensify peace-building efforts and ensure that the people are better served where there is need for redress,” Obaseki assured.
He reiterated the need for cordial relations, noting that the state government was working assiduously to maintain law and order and will not tolerate actions that will undermine its efforts.
