Edo State Governor Mr. Godwin Obaseki said his administration was set to upgrade the state owned media outfits, including Edo Broadcasting Service (EBS) and The Nigerian Observer, publishers of the Observer tittles.
Obaseki stated this on Monday when he paid an unscheduled visit to the two government-owned media organizations for an inspection of their facilities on ground to see how to positively upgrade them to meet the present digital media era standard.
First at EBS, Obaseki who was taken round by the Assistant General Manager (AGM) Engineering of the company, Ameze Osagie said his administration need to upgrade the state owned media outfits to be able to compete favourably with other media houses across the nation.
“Clearly, we need to upgrade the station, this was good for its time but today with the digital era, we need to upgrade the technology, the premises, the quality of its people, we need to step it up”.
On the area of encroachment of the land belonging to EBS, he said the government will recover the land that has been encroached upon by land developers saying it will be needed for the upgrade of the facilities.
“Thank God we have the laws in place, for those who have taken government land around this area, we need to collect the land back and use it to the facilities here.” On the seriousness of his administration to upgrade EBS, the governor said they should wait and see.
At The Nigerian Observer, publishers of the Observer tittles, Governor Obaseki who was taken round the facilities by the Corporation’s General Manager, Rev. Monday Aigbe said he had come to take a look at the facilities on ground the media outfit, established by Late Brg. Samuel Ogbemudia fifty years ago.
“I am not a media person or an expert but will consult and talk to people who know about the digital media era. Let us be clear on what to do and how we want to do it.”
“I don’t know what we will end up doing with this organization because by the time it was set up in 1968, it was for its time using frontline technology, frontline press set up 50 years ago but today the media world has changed, technology has made things different. 50 years after with the same attitude we should look at where is the world today” he concluded.
