In the embarrassing footage that has since ignited widespread outrage on social media, officers of the Mobile Police Force (MOPOL 1) are seen accepting wads of cash from foreign nationals.

Human rights activist and presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has condemned the Nigerian police over a viral video that shows Chinese nationals distributing cash to police officers.

Sowore Slams Nigerian Police Over ‘Shameful’ Video Showing MOPOL Officers Receiving Cash Handouts From Chinese Nationals

In the embarrassing footage that has since ignited widespread outrage on social media, officers of the Mobile Police Force (MOPOL 1) are seen accepting wads of cash from foreign nationals.

SaharaReporters earlier reported that the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, had ordered the Provost of 1 Police Mobile Force (MOPOL) in Kaduna and DSP Aliyu Adejembi, along with his team to appear for questioning following the circulation of the video showing them lined up to receive cash handouts from the Chinese businesspeople.

The officers are to appear before the IGP via the Force Public Relations Department on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, at 9 am without fail.

SaharaReporters gathered that the officers from MOPOL 1 were in Lagos on special duty with the Chinese nationals when the incident occurred.

A police wireless message obtained by SaharaReporters dated April 15, 2025, reads: “Order and directives. Professional misconduct x discreditable conduct x eye respectfully convey INGENPOL directive x that you warn x release x Provost 1 PMF Kaduna X to come along with DSP Aliyu Adejembi X and team X to interview INGENPOL X through PRESSFOR X unfailingly x on Wednesday 16/04/2025 X at 0900HRS X eye repeat X on Wednesday 16/04/2025 X at 0900HRS X treat as very important please.”

Reacting via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, Sowore described the incident as a “shameful act” and blamed it on the collapse of discipline and integrity within the Nigeria Police Force.

“These are shameful acts by men of the MOPOL 1 of @PoliceNG in Kaduna. They’re reduced to nobody because of greed and indiscipline. This is why I keep saying Illegal IGP Kayode Egbetokun must leave the police force and let fresh hands run the Nigeria Police Force. It is the shame of the nation,” Sowore wrote, using the hashtag #EgbetokunMustGo.

The footage has sparked calls for an investigation into the conduct of the officers involved and the nature of their relationship with the Chinese nationals.

Critics argue that the video exemplifies the deep-rooted corruption that has plagued the Nigerian police for decades, further eroding public trust.

Sowore, a vocal critic of the Nigerian government and law enforcement institutions, has repeatedly accused the current Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, of presiding over a corrupt and compromised force. His latest statement intensifies the demand for a total overhaul of the policing system in Nigeria.
