Ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State and Governor Monday Okpebholo are in complete disarray, gripped by palpable tension, “because they cannot defend the brazen heist of the September 21 governorship election, from which they were the sole beneficiaries,” according to opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Edo State branch of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) made the assertion in a press statement signed by its Publicity, Mr. Chris Osa Nehikhare in Benin on Tuesday.
Nehikhare took a swipe at the APC and Governor Monday Okpepbholo, accusing them of engaging in distraction, lies, falsity and distortion of facts with reference to the disputed gubernatorial election currently before the Tribunal, and governance in the state.
His words: “Realizing that they cannot defend the indefensible, the APC has now resorted to outlandish propaganda, twisting facts and telling unintelligent lies in the media, in a desperate and devious attempt to mask their obvious failure and manipulate public perception, the PDP said in the statement.
“First, last week, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) abandoned its own declaration, and the very institution that declared the APC and its candidate, Senator Monday Okpebholo winners, refused to defend its actions, failing to call a single witness after promising to do so.
“Then Okpebholo, on Monday this week, left to justify his own legitimacy, called just one witness, and in a stunning twist, even that witness admitted under cross-examination that over-voting occurred.
“Rattled and humiliated, his lawyers abruptly shut down their own defense, running from the tribunal in full retreat.
“The APC, 3rd respondent, sensing the disaster unfolding, scrambled and pleaded for an adjournment to buy time, leading to the adjournment of the proceedings to Wednesday, February 12.
“Instead of re-examining their losing legal strategy, the APC and their handlers have instead embarked on a voyage into the world of fantasy, aggressively sponsoring false narratives in various sections of the media, and telling a completely different story from what actually transpired in court.
“We, however, want to tell them that no amount of delay or propaganda can change the facts. Their lawyers are not likely to fare any better.
“The evidence is irrefutable: BVAS records, IREV data, and CTCs all tell the same story, the election was rigged, and Okpebholo has no business sitting as governor.
“Nigerians cannot be deceived by their unintelligent lies and cheap propaganda. They witnessed the electoral robbery firsthand and are keenly following the tribunal’s proceedings.
“The people are eagerly awaiting the judiciary to correct the wrong that was done on September 21, 2024, and return the stolen mandate to the PDP and Asue Ighodalo, whom they overwhelmingly voted for during the last governorship election in the State.”
