…as Makinde reiterates commitment to provide enabling environment for technological innovations

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has declared the federal government’s commitment to utilising technology as a key driver of economic growth and a solution to youth unemployment.

He made this known yesterday while delivering a keynote address at the Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Nigeria (RAIN) Summit 1.0, themed: “The Rain of Transformation Is Upon Us: CEOs Arise,” in Ibadan.

According to him, the government is acutely aware of Nigeria’s demographic realities, saying, “Don’t be discouraged nor confused about politics; the government of President Bola Tinubu is extremely aware that Nigeria is a country that is more than 235 million people.”

He emphasised the urgency of addressing the youth unemployment crisis, noting that the nation is adding approximately five million people every year, adding that: “Our population is projected to be half a billion by 2050.”

Dr. Tijani pointed out that many people remain unaware of this significant growth, highlighting the average age of Nigerians at 16.9 years.

“The president actually decided to appoint a lot of young people,” he noted, underscoring a commitment to empowering youths.

He stressed the need for a strong foundation for the economy, saying that: “The president is very keen on building a foundation that will actually set our economy on the path to prosperity. But these are difficult things to do without stepping on toes.”

The minister further pointed out that the future prosperity of Nigeria cannot rely solely on the government, stating that: “The future that we see as a country is not going to be possible if we outsource the work to government only. Government’s role is to build a foundational infrastructure that will make things possible for a lot of people.”

He, however, emphasiding the importance of investment in technology, adding that: “There is no nation that can develop without investing in technology, because technology is responsible for development. We must continue to find ways to invest in things that will secure your future.”

In his remarks, Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, reiterated his commitment to ensuring an enabling environment for technological innovations.

Represented by the Special Assistant on ICT, Mr. Bayo Akande, the governor maintained that his administration is dedicated to fostering a supportive ecosystem for tech-driven initiatives.

“Our government will ensure that the right policies are in place to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship.”

He emphasised the ongoing efforts to boost digital literacy and equip young people with essential skills for the evolving job market.

In his address, the convener of the summit, Dr. Olusola Ayoola, stressed the importance of technology as a transformative force, stating that: “Technology is not just a tool; it is the backbone of our progress.”

Dr. Ayoola called for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to harness technological advancements for national development.

He articulated a vision where technology serves as a bridge to opportunities, saying that: “We must leverage our collective expertise to turn challenges into opportunities for our youths.”
