Edo State Police Command said it has initiated an immediate investigation into the tragic and avoidable death of Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, the former Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in Edo State.
The incident sparked public outrage and allegations of police “unprofessional conduct.”
Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, who was also a prominent civil society leader, reportedly died after a confrontation with police officers during a stop-and-search operation in Benin City, Tuesday.
It was gathered that the tragic incident occurred along Upper Sokponba area, where Eboigbodin and his wife were stopped by policemen for routine checks.
It was further scooped that the tension from the interaction and the ensuing aggressive behaviour of the officers led to Comrade Eboigbodin collapsing.
Instead of offering first hand assistance, the officers allegedly fled the scene, leaving bystanders and his wife to rush him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The probe follows a 48-hour ultimatum issued by civil society groups, demanding the police to clarify the circumstances surrounding the Ex-NLC Chairman’s death and to hold those responsible accountable for any wrongdoing.
A statement issued by the Command’s spokesman, SP Moses Joel Yamu, and made available to journalists in Benin City on Wednesday, confirmed the police’s response to the situation.
“The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Police has received with great concern, news of the death of Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin former Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, allegedly due to Police “unprofessional conduct”.
