Renowned social critic and human rights activist, Comrade Igbotako Nowinta, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to urgently help to fish out those police officers, who mounted a roadblock in an area in Benin City on Monday December 2nd, 2024, which subsequently led to the sudden demise of Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin.
Comrade Nowinta, an international conflict resolution expert, who doubles as the Executive Director, Nigeria Good Governance Research Centre (NGGRC), made this call via a press release titled: “The Police Officers Who Generated The Suffocating Atmosphere Which Led To The Sudden Death Of Comrade Eboigbodin Must Be Fished Out”, which he gave to journalists on Tuesday.
Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin, a former Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Edo State, tragically passed away on Monday, December 2nd, 2024, following an encounter with police officers at a roadblock in the Upper Sokponba area of Benin. According to reports, Eboigbodin was stopped while driving with his wife and the police demanded for his vehicle papers, which were up to date. They allegedly raised concerns about a discrepancy between the car’s glass engraving and its plate number. Despite providing explanations, the police reportedly seized Eboigbodin documents, ordered his arrest, and called for a tow truck to impound his car.
According to the full text of the press release:
“The sudden death of Comrade Kaduna Eboigbodin as a result of the discomforting and utterly suffocating atmosphere created by some police officers in Benin City, on Monday December 2nd, 2024, at a checking point, came to us as a rude shock. What a stunning, brutal and devastating blow to the body of comrades in Edo State?
“We at the Nigeria Good Governance Research Centre (NGGRC) sees this most unfortunate development as another barbaric method employed by some crazy and unprofessional police personnel, to flush life out of one of the most finest, bubbling and dedicated comrades in the struggle for a better Nigeria in Edo State”
“The sudden death of comrade Eboigbodin was one too many in the hands of a policing system that has become a willing instrument of oppression, intimidation and terror; a menace barbarously plagued by corruption and scandals”.
“We hereby call on the Inspection – General of Police in Nigeria, Kayode Egbetokun, to commence urgent procedure that will fish out those monsters, agents of extreme greed who are always after their bulging stomachs and pockets at police check points across the country; who deliberately changed what was a serene atmosphere into a deadly encounter by making comrade Eboigbodin to die like a chicken. Those accursed police officers must be held criminally responsible for this heinous murder”.
“The illegal extortion being carried out at most police check points is unacceptable and barbaric; we see them every day. Therefore, we call on the Inspector – General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to use this repulsively nauseating development, to save the Nigeria Police from further being one of the most savagery in the history of organizational savages in the world; he should ensure that uncivilized approach to policing are stopped at checking points, by systematically turning this kleptocratic system into a sanitized organ of civility”.
“What is wrong if the IG summon courage to set up a special committee to fish and flush out bad and rotten eggs from the police force in Nigeria, such as those who made Comrades Kaduna Eboigbodin to meet his untimely death?”.
