Edo State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Samson Osagie, has said that the suspension of local government council chairmen and their deputies does not undermine the democratic structure at the grassroots level.
In his reation to claims by the suspended chairmen, who described the suspension as illegal, Dr. Osagie stated that the Edo State House of Assembly acted within its powers under the Local Government Administration Law and Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
He emphasized that the suspension was in line with due process, urging the affected chairmen to remain patient while the committee set up to investigate allegations against them concludes its work. He assured that those cleared of any wrongdoing after the two-month suspension would resume their positions without hindrance.
While acknowledging their right to protest, Dr. Osagie advised aggrieved council chairmen to seek legal redress in court rather than resort to public confrontation.
He reiterated that Governor Monday Okpebholo, as the Chief Security Officer of the state, would not condone acts of indiscipline or brigandage in the name of protests, stressing the need for orderliness and respect for the rule of law.
