Edo State Police Command has called on government officials, religious bodies, and other relevant groups to collaborate with the police to ensure the safe and organized distribution of palliatives to residents.
This call comes in the wake of recent tragic incidents where stampedes during palliative distribution events resulted in the loss of lives across Nigeria.
At least 67 people have reportedly died in stampedes in states such as Anambra, Oyo, and even the nation’s capital, Abuja, where disorganized distribution processes have triggered chaos leading to avoidable deaths.
In a statement issued by the police spokesperson, SP Moses Joel Yamu, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, CP Ozigi P. Umoru, expressed deep concern over the growing trend of stampedes.
He warned that event organizers must prioritize security and coordinate with law enforcement to avoid similar tragedies in Edo State.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Ozigi P. Umoru, psc, mnips therefore warns groups and organizers of similar events to ensure they involve the Police or other security agencies to avoid such occurrence in the State.
“The Command remains committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property at all times”, parts of the statement read.
The police emphasized their unwavering commitment to ensuring public safety and urged all concerned parties to take proactive steps to prevent further incidents as the palliative distribution efforts continue.
