The Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has approved the payment of a “13th-month” salary for workers in the state, as part of efforts to motivate the workforce and enhance productivity.
In addition, the Governor has introduced a new policy offering automatic employment in the state civil service to First Class graduates of Edo origin from universities in Nigeria and abroad.
The initiative, tagged the Graduate Development Programme (GDP), aims to attract and retain top-quality manpower for effective service delivery in the state.
Speaking on the development, the Head of Service (HoS), Dr. Anthony Okungbowa, commended the Governor’s decision, describing it as a game-changer for the public service.
“This is a clear demonstration of the Governor’s commitment to improving the quality of service delivery in Edo State.
“By approving the Graduate Development Programme, His Excellency is bringing in First Class graduates and other high-grade professionals to ensure a robust and efficient civil service,” Dr. Okungbowa said.
He further highlighted that the programme is not only focused on recruitment, but also on the retention and development of these talents.
“The Governor is intentional about retaining these top-level talents. Plans are also underway to expose them to private sector experiences through partnerships with Edo Innovate and other initiatives, enabling them to bring fresh ideas and solutions to the public sector,” he added.
The policy, initially targeting graduates from 2020 onward, may be expanded to accommodate more beneficiaries.
The Governor also encouraged qualified Edo indigenes to seize the opportunity and contribute to the state’s growth.
The HoS emphasized the sustainability of the initiative, noting that it requires the commitment of all stakeholders to maintain its impact.
