…Calls for the sack of Mahmoud Yakubu and the restructuring of INEC
Benin City, Edo, Nigeria – Social critic and human rights activist, Comrade Igbotako Nowinta has described the September 21, 2024 Edo State Governorship Election, as a political witch hunting exercise against Governor Godwin Obaseki and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Comrade Nowinta, Executive Director, Nigeria Good Governance Research Centre (NGGRC) made this assertion in a press statement he issued in Benin City, Edo State capital on Monday.
He said the “Governorship election was rigged with fabulous precision against the popular choice of the people of Edo state by autocratic political lunatics who are very far from the basic rudiments of democracy, and equally have the backing of the highest political cabal in the land”.
Below is the remaining part of the statement:
“It is not surprising that the pinnacle of electoral brazenness was stagged managed in Edo state during the governorship election of September 21st, 2024; we saw it coming”.
“How do we expect a free and fair election with a character like Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu still controlling things and pushing the needle around at the headquarters of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)?”
“What we saw was simply a fraud, gigantic charade, a crude process where figures were allocated at midnight to the declared winner, to settle political scores; a political witch hunting against Governor Godwin Obaseki and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo state.”
“We at the Nigeria Good Governance Research Centre dare to declare that the Governorship election was rigged with fabulous precision against the popular choice of the people of Edo state by autocratic political lunatics who are very far from the basic rudiments of democracy, and equally have the backing of the highest political cabal in the land; we saw how brutal barbaric power reigned supreme and selfish interests of a few prevailed against the electorates.”
“Justice the corner stone of any civilized society did not take a significant place in the realm of moral and political value in Edo state over the weekend, as the powers that be manoeuvred menacingly, like shirks in the shadows”
“In the light of the above, we call on Nigerians to stridently demand the immediate removal of Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, Chairman, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the drastic review of the laws setting up the Commission, to reflect transparency and credibility, in line with positive global standards in election management”
“Ultimately, we call on Nigerians to perpetually come together, resist this current potent evil called democracy in our land. We should be tired now of a prevailing situation, where electoral process in Nigeria has become premeditated, well funded and executed using a compromised body like INEC against the genuine wishes and aspirations of Nigerian people”
