ANEEJ Collaborates With Civil Society Situation Room, Police On Edo Guber Election Peace And Security Summit

Nigeria’s frontline rights group, the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), on Tuesday in collaboration with the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room, Korea Development Institute (KDI) and the Nigerian Police Force, hosted the Edo 2024 Governorship Election Peace and Security Summit.

The event was supported by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

Themed “Promoting Unity and Navigating the Path to Peaceful Election,” the summit brought together security agencies, traditional leaders, INEC officials, civil society, religious leaders and media organizations to discuss strategies for ensuring a peaceful electoral process.

Key discussions included addressing the pervasive issue of vote-buying, with representatives from ICPC and security agencies calling for stricter monitoring and enforcement of anti-corruption laws.

The role of traditional leaders in voter education was also highlighted, emphasizing their active engagement in fostering community participation and reducing voter apathy.

Additionally, measures to curb election-related violence, including ballot box snatching, were outlined by security agencies.

The summit concluded with a collective commitment from political leaders, INEC, security agencies, and religious figures to ensure a transparent, peaceful election.

ANEEJ Executive Director, Rev. David Ugolor, in a concluding remark and vote of thanks urged stakeholders to uphold unity, peace, and the integrity of the election process to secure a better future for Edo State.
