The Joint National Association of Persons with disabilities (JONAPWD), Edo State chapter has decried the low level awareness and implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disability Prohibition Law, two years after it was signed into law by the state government.
At a media parley organised in Benin City, with support by the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption (ROLAC) to create awareness on issues related to persons with disabilities (PWD), child rights and gender related matters, the Chairperson of JONAPWD, Ann Ojiugo however commended the Edo State government for for steps taken toward implementing of the law.
She identified such steps to include designation of car parking lots for PWDs at the State Secretariat building in Benin City.
She urged the state government to give priority attention to the creation of the Disability Commission which she said is very fundamental for the effective coordination and enforcement of the provision of the disability law. to
According to her, the establishment of the commission would be a demonstration of the Edo State government’s commitment to the welfare of PWDs and as well, give them a better sense of belonging.
The chairman of the Nigeria Inion of Journalists (NUJ), Edo State Council, Comrade Festus Alenkhe in his remarks at the occasion assured that infrastructures at the union’s Press Centre would be made disability friendly.
