Oba Ewuare II Receives Another Tranche Of 1897 Looted Artifacts

The Benin Monarch, His Royal Majesty, Oba Ewuare II has received another tranche of artifacts looted in 1897 by the British soldiers during their invasion of the Benin Kingdom.

The artifacts are a wooden coronation stool and another made with bronze, 

Oba Ewuare II said the stools were made during the reigns of Oba Esigie and Oba Eresoyen of Benin Kingdom

The Director General of National Commission for Museum and Monument (NCMM), Mr Olugbile Halloway who handed over the artifacts to Oba Ewuare II said that the stools were retrieved from Germany in 2022.

He disclosed that the artifacts, some of which are  with private stakeholders would be returned in phases as talks were ongoing with those in their possession

According to him, the NCMM would do all within its power to retrieve the artifacts as the commission was erecting facilities to host some of the artifacts.

The return of the artifacts threw the Palace into wild jubilation, with singing and dancing as Oba Ewuare II sat on one of the centuries old stool
