Workers in the Oredo Government Council on Monday in Benin City began Operation Beat Plastic Waste, an initiative geared towards the evacuation of the accumulated non-degradable plastic waste from the City.
The five-day clean-up exercise from 7:30 am to 10:30 am daily, through Friday witnessed a massive turnout of participants cut across groups within the council and the public.
Speaking during the exercise, the Executive Chairman, of Oredo Government Council, Pharmacist Tom Obaseki said the initiative is one among several measures put in place by the government to improve the State’s ecosystem.
Dr. Tom stressed that the clean-up exercise will serve as a veritable illustration to demonstrate to the people of Oredo how they are to keep their environment clean, encouraging the inhabitants of the council to take very seriously the various environmental sensitization programs that have been carried out in the State.
He explained that the government’s efforts towards providing proper guidance on environmental caution are for the betterment of all, just as he warned against indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste in drains or anywhere else other than the authorized waste outlets.
While praising the staffers of the council and state government for their support in the actualization of the project, Dr. Tom Obaseki stated that the State government has an unwavering commitment to maintaining a clean and habitable environment for all residents in the State.
He, however, appealed for support from the owners of media organizations in the State, to help create educative content, using their various platforms to sensitize the residents on how to sustain a clean environment.
On his part, the Commissioner for the Ministry of Environment and Sustainability, Arc. Joshua Omokhodion hinted that the Clean-up exercise undertaken by the Oredo Local Government Council serves as a good initiative
He said Oredo being the center of the state and host to the Government House and the palace of the Oba of Benin, makes it necessary for it to be devoid of improper waste disposal.
