Edo Assembly Begins Impeachment Of DG Shaibu

By Eben Enasco

Edo State House of Assembly on Wednesday served a notice of impeachment on the Deputy Governor of the State, Rt Hon. Philip Shaibu, setting in motion the proceedings for the potential ouster of the embattled number two man in the heartbeat of the nation.

Presenting the petition notice on the floor of the Hallowed Chambers on Wednesday in a petition signed by 21 members the Majority Leader of the 8th Assembly Hon Charity Aiguobarueghian cited Section 188 subsections 1 and 2a, of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He disclosed that the petition was sent to the house on the 5th day of March 2024.

He gave two reasons for the impeachment moves by the house including giving out information against the state government and accusing him of lying under the oath of office he undertook as he interpreted it to mean perjury.

In his remarks on the impeachment notice petition, the speaker Rt Hon Blessing Sherif Agbebaku acknowledged the petition signed by 21 members of the 24 elected members and directed the clerk of the house Yahaya Omogbai, to send a notice of response to the Deputy Governor within seven days.

Recall that the deputy governor Rt Hon. Philip Shaibu and his principal and governor, Godwin Obaseki have been engrossed in political power play over the choice of who to succeed him when his tenure ends sometime in the year.

Governor Obaseki is believed to be backing Dr. Asue Ighodalo over the choice of his deputy who continues to propagate his decision to contest the gubernatorial election against his Principal despite earlier intervention by some notable personality in the state that later hit a snag, therefore, creating a parallel interest between the duo.

The house will resume plenary on Monday, March 11, 2024.
