Tinubu Should Discontinue Nnamdi Kanu’s Trial To Enhance Peace, Development In Nigeria – Ohanaeze Council

The President General of OYC, Igboayaka Igboayaka made the call on Thursday while addressing journalists at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The Ohanaeze Youth Council (OYC), the apex socio-cultural youth organisation of Igbo, has asked the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government to discontinue the trial of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for the sake of peace and development in the South-East region.

The President General of OYC, Igboayaka Igboayaka made the call on Thursday while addressing journalists at the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Igboayaka, who frowned at the manner former President Mohammadu Buhari handled the issue of Self-Determination agitators in the South East, thereby aggravating the already tensed situation in the region alleged that Nnamdi Kanu’s prosecution was a cold war against the Igbo.

Igboayaka said that the policies of former President Buhari like the operation python dance of the Nigerian Army, that, according to him, claimed over 200 lives of Igbo youths, “Constant harassment/intimidation, extra-judicial killings, the continuous detention of Nnamdi Kanu, have  failed woefully to achieve peace and development in the South East but emboldened the agitations further.”

He further said that the continuous detention and trial of Kanu amounts to “Reinforcement of failure which had neither achieved peace, unity nor development in the region.”

Igboayaka noted that “There is no better time to focus on achieving peace and development in South East region of Nigeria and healing of protracted wounds by President Bola Tinubu, than now, starting by dropping all charges against Nnamdi Kanu and setting him free as he appears in court on Monday for the continuation of former president’s headless trial.”

On the withdrawal of the treasonable charges against of human rights activist and convener of #RevolutionNow, Omoyele Sowore, by President Tinubu-led Nigerian government, Igboayaka commended the President “for the wise decision for the interest of peace in Nigeria.”

The OYC President added that as Kanu appears in court on Monday, all lovers of peace in Nigeria are expecting President Tinubu to discontinue the case by withdrawing all charges against the IPOB leader for the interest of peace in the country.

He also called on Justice Binta Nyako “To free herself from the past executive pressures and see from the legal point of view to invoke the principles of “Justice of Peace” on the case of Nnamdi Kanu and grant his bail application by the legal counsel as it is obviously clear that Nnamdi Kanu’s release is very crucial to achieving a lasting peace in the South East region.”
