Today, the United States and the European Union welcomed Canada, the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), Germany, Japan, and Nigeria as Champions of the Global Methane Pledge (GMP).
The group of champions — already leaders in methane reduction efforts — are uniting to support and galvanize further progress by the 150 countries and other partners participating in the Global Methane Pledge.
As champions, they will continue to spur domestic action in their respective countries, the Department of States said in a statement made available to Alltimepost.com today.
The GMP was launched by United States and the European Union at COP26 in 2021 and has now been endorsed by 150 countries that have committed to take voluntary actions to contribute to a collective effort to reduce global methane emissions by at least 30 percent from 2020 levels by 2030.
The State Department further stated: “As underscored in recent assessments by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) convened Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC), and the International Energy Agency, achieving this 30 percent reduction is critical for keeping a 1.5°C future within reach, preventing hundreds of thousands of premature deaths and hospital admissions, boosting global crop yields by 15 million tons, and preventing the loss of 60 billion work hours associated with heat exposure.”
