Serve Your People Not Your Godfathers, Onobun Charges Eight Assembly Members

By Eben Enasco

Outgoing Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly Rt Hon Marcus Onobun has Charged members of the Eight Assembly-elect to be more concerned about the plight of their constituents, not their leaders.

This is because, Onobun believes that achieving the primacy of veritable representatives and the provision of democratic dividends, should form a larger part of their policy obligations to the people who elected them into office.

Onobun who gave the charge at the Thanksgiving and Praise Night ceremony of the Seventh Assembly in Benin City said he was pleased to be witnessing the Inauguration of the Eight Assembly considering the rough takeoff of the Seventh House of Assembly.

He maintained that, despite the early hiccups the few numbers left, managed to stick together and delivered the legislative businesses during the four years.

He admonished elected members to be prudent with their mandates regardless of their background and put aside political interests, assuring them of achieving an exit that will be more glorious when they cleave with the mindset of serving the people.

He pledged to continue to use his position as a newly elected member representing Esan Central, Esan West, and Igueben Federal Constituency at the National Assembly to attract people-oriented policies for the good of his constituents and Edo State by extension.

While thanking Governor Godwin Obaseki for providing a friendly environment for the two arms of government to thrive, he said not too many people understand the bond that existed during his legislative voyage.

The newly elected 26 members of the Eighth Assembly were sworn in on Friday June 16, 2023, following Governor Obaseki’s issuance of the instrument of proclamation as stipulated by the 99 constitution.
