Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka has injured the feelings of Obedient family around the world by describing them as “fascists” in the current political struggle and “descended to the gutter of unpatriotic rebels in Nigeria.”
The Chairman, Media & Publicity Committee, Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council ( LP- PCC) Edo State, Comrade Igbotako Nowinta made the remarks in Benin at the weekend, while reacting to Soyinka’s recent comments against Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Vice- Presidential Candidate of Labour Party (LP), during the February 25th, 2023 Presidential Elections in Nigeria..
“Wole Soyinka is a disgrace to Nigeria’s current Democratic Struggle,” Nowinta noted, describing as unguarded and reckless “his verbal attacks against Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed.”
It would be recalled that last Wednesday, Soyinka, described as unbecoming and unacceptable, the remarks by the vice-presidential candidate of the LP, Datti Baba-Ahmed, saying they contained “fascistic language.”
Baba-Ahmed had called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chief Justice of Nigeria not to swear in Tinubu, who was declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, as the winner of the March 18th presidential election.
The Labour Party vice-presidential candidate, who spoke as a guest on Channels TV’s Politics Today, insisted that declaring Tinubu a winner and issuing him a certificate of return was against the constitution.
Below is the remaining text of the statement released by Igbotako Nowinta:
“Prof. Wole Soyinka descended to the gutter of unpatriotic rebels in Nigeria and injured the feelings of Obedient family globally, by choosing to take side with those that specialises in soaking our country with blood and bleeding it repeatedly and consistently, going by the way the February 25th, 2023 Presidential Election was rigged by political cartels.
“What has happened to the conscience of this Nobel laureate at 88 years; who does he want; what is he being promised or given that he has decided to jeopardize and abandon the path of national sanity, progress and decency?
“Why has he decided to walk and reason with those unleashing discriminatory and horrifying attacks on the civilian populace in the name of our stolen mandate? Why is this Prof. wearing the toga of pageants of pandemonium, scandals, outrage and lawlessness?
“What moral superiority is Wole Soyinka claiming in a country swimming in the ocean of institutionalized and structural violence against the masses? Why is this man providing lethal verbal assistance to the likes of Bola Ahmed Tinubu at a time of deepening political tensions?
“Surely this Prof. is a disgrace to our current democratic struggle, in a country that has become an insane environment; a stunning tale of tragedy and neglect; where the masses are being grinded to dust by political criminals.
“By calling us ‘fascists’ because we want to claim back our country is irrational and absurd coming from Wole Soyinka. But, while we eagerly wait for the outcome of the petition already served by Peter Obi at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal, we are confident in the supreme influence of divinity to win our stolen mandate back.”
