Updated: Nigeria Police Mourn Late AIG Lawan Jimeta

Benin City, Nigeria – The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Usman Alkali Baba has on behalf of the Force Management team, and Officers of the Nigeria Police Force announced the death of AIG Zone 5, Lawan Tanko Jimeta, describing him as a great poet, philosopher, a passionate officer and peace lover.

Jimeta’s sudden exit on Sunday morning which was reported by a section of the media as related to fall incident in his home, sent a shock wave across his zone of jurisdiction and beyond.

The IGP confirmed that AIG Lawan Tanko Jimeta’s passing occurred in the early hours of Sunday February 12, 2023, at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, after a brief illness.

This update was contained in a statement released on Sunday afternoon by the Force Headquarters, Abuja Public Relations Officer, CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

“The late AIG enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on 3rd March 1990 and was a dedicated officer with a great passion for training and mentorship in the field of security intelligence and peace support operations.

“A philosopher and poet per excellence, he has a collection of poems tagged “Song of the Peacekeeper” to his credit, and has featured on every edition of the Police ‘New Dawn Magazine’ as a guest poet,” he stated.

The Inspector-General of Police however acknowledged the late AIG ingenuity and commitment to duty just as he condoled with his immediate family, relatives, fellow course mates, and friends.

Also, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Department of Finance and Administration, Zone 5, DCP Betty Otinmeyin has on behalf of the management team, entire Officers and Men of the Zone commiserated with Jimeta family of Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, the Government and good People of Adamawa state on the death of their illustrious son, AIG Lawan Tanko Jimeta.

The DCP described his death as a great and painful loss to the entire Nigeria Police Force.

“AIG Lawan Tanko Jimeta, psc, passed on in the early hours of 12th February 2023, at the age of 58 years, after a brief Illness at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Edo State.

“May his gentle soul rest in the bosom of the Almighty God and the Good Lord grant his family the fortitude to bear this great and painful loss,” she said.

This was contained in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer, Zone 5, DSP Tijani Momoh and made available to Journalists in Benin City, Sunday.

DSP Tijani however stated that a condolence register has been opened at the reception of the Zonal Command Headquarters in Benin City for the personnel of the Zone and members of the public to append their condolence message.
