Return To Duty Post, Defend Yourselves, IGP Orders Edo police

By MIKE OSAROGIAGBON

Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Abubakar Adamu has ordered police in Edo to return to their respective duty posts, protect themselves as it does not make sense for a policeman to be killed when he is carrying a rifle.

IGP Mohammed gave the order while addressing operatives of the Edo State Police Command during his post #EndSARS protest visit to the state, Wednesday, November 4, 2020.

“Does it make sense to you for a policeman to die when he is carrying a rifle?” He quizzed rhetorically.

He enjoined the officers to always remember Force order 237 which spells out the condition under which an operative can use his firearms as police officers are also entitled to human rights protection.

IGP Mohammed Adamu explained that the targets of the criminals that hijacked the #EndSARS protests was to provoke police maximum force towards unprofessional conducts.

The police chief, however, expressed appreciation to operatives of Edo police command for displaying resilience and professionalism in the face of the attacks on police personnel and facilities.

“All that happened in terms of attacks on the police and police stations should never stop us from coming out to perform our constitutional duties.

“But while we are performing this our constitutional duties we must also protect ourselves because every policeman is a human being and we are also entitled to human rights protection.

“Do not forget your force order 237. Read it very well, digest it very well and know when to use your firearms”. IGP Mohammed advised.

The visiting IG also visited some police stations affected by the carnage unleashed by the hoodlums on Monday, October 19, 2020.

Among the stations were Ugbekun divisional police headquarters, Upper Sokponba road, Oba market and Saint Saviour in Benin City.
