Massachusetts residents, who voted for Biden by over 30 points, went into the streets to celebrate the Democrat’s projected win Saturday
BOSTON — Democrats in Boston and across Massachusetts celebrated Saturday after Joe Biden was projected as the winner of the presidential election, while a group of Donald Trump supporters protested at the Statehouse.
Unofficial election results in Pennsylvania, with 20 electoral votes, put Biden over the 270 electoral votes required to win the presidency, the Associated Press and other news organizations projected Saturday morning.
Massachusetts voted for the president-elect by over 30 points, one of the largest margins he won in any state, according to unofficial results. As soon as the race was called, his supporters began to gather to march through the streets of Boston in celebration.
President-elect Biden said in a statement he is “honored and humbled by the trust the American people have placed” in a ticket that gives America its first woman vice president, 56-year-old Sen. Kamala Harris of California.
Massachusetts elected Democrats congratulated the presidential ticket.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren celebrated the win — and the first female vice president — in a statement.
“Americans showed up in record-shattering numbers to make their voices heard. Joe and Kamala have won more votes than any candidate in history,” she wrote. “And for the very first time, we’ve elected a woman as our Vice President. Millions of little girls who see themselves in Kamala will dream a little bigger tonight.”
Warren went on to call for “structural change,” calling the election “a mandate for action on bold plans to meet these twin health and economic crises.”
“Congratulations Joe Biden and Kamala Harris,” Sen. Ed Markey said on Twitter. “This is a historic victory for al Americans—for workers, immigrants, women, communities of color. For everyone who believes in science, equality, justice, and decency. We will rebuild and emerge stronger under their leadership.”
“Today, we celebrate hope, equality, truth, science, democracy, and our future,” Rep. Katherine Clark said. “Tomorrow, we begin rebuilding and creating an America where everyone can succeed. Congrats, President-Elect @JoeBiden and Vice President- Elect @KamalaHarris!”
“It’s official! Congratulations President Elect @JoeBiden & Vice President Elect @KamalaHarris,” Rep. Ayanna Pressley said. “You have made history and now, together, we’re ready to make change. Now is the time for bold, people powered policies. Let’s get to work and build a more just America.”
Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican, also congratulated Biden and Harris.
“I congratulate President-elect Biden and Vice President-elect Harris on their victory,” Baker said in a Tweet. “This has been a long and divisive campaign, but now it is critical for us all to focus on the very real and immediate challenges facing this nation.”
“If the courts do get involved, they must move quickly to make fact-based, lawful decisions, because the people of this nation – who came out and voted in record numbers – deserve a government that can work collaboratively to fight COVID-19, rebuild our economy and give people hope that there will be a positive path forward,” he added.
Baker dismissed Trump’s claims of electoral fraud Friday.
“I think the president’s comments that there’s some sort of national conspiracy around this aren’t supported by the facts,” Baker said on Friday. “And they’re damaging to democracy.”
Trump’s claims did draw out a group of protesters at the Statehouse, Saturday, who called for a recount.
