Leadership Crisis As Edo Assembly Impeaches Speaker Francis Okiye

BY EMYA DAVID

Members of Edo state house of Assembly on Monday, impeached their Speaker Mr. Francis Okiye and replaced him with a member representing Esan west, Hon. Marcus Onobun.

The impeachment came two weeks after the governorship election of September 19, 2020.

Hon. Francis Okiye’s impeachment followed a motion moved by the majority leader of the House, Hon. Henry Okhurobo for alleged financial misappropriation.

The impeachment letter was signed by the nine out of the 10-members who were present at the brief sitting on Monday.

The house also unanimously amended its rules to allow for a first time Member to be speaker.

The new speaker Hon. Marcus Onobun promised to carry everybody along and bring Edo to limelight.

As at the time of filling this report, Rt Hon. Francis Okiye was yet to accept or reject his new Status but sources close to him say his camp was trying frantically to resolve the power tussle amicably.

The question on the lips of Observers is whether the Ten House of Assembly Members who have been sitting in Government House having been inaugurated under controversial circumstances, could harbor such animosity towards themselves to warrant a public fight resulting to ugly impeachment.
