United States-based advocacy group, Edo Diaspora Women has endorsed the exercise of citizens’ civil and political rights by way of peaceful protests and accordingly supported the position of the Nigerian youths.
The organization, in a statement at the weekend, signed by its founder, Mrs. Adesuwa Omoruyi Obasohan, spoke against the backdrop of the recent precarious situation in Nigeria, arising from the #EndSARS peaceful protests, the dastardly activities of hoodlums and “the unconscionable and unnecessary violent intervention of the Nigerian Security Agencies.”
The group condemned in the strongest terms, the violent intervention of the Nigerian Military, or any other security outfits to mow down peaceful protesters.
Edo Diaspora Women also expressed its abhorrence and condemnation over the menace perpetrated by the hoodlums who hijacked the protests in various parts of the country for selfish and destructive motives.
“The atrocious act of rape of women and young girls, killings of innocent people, burning of properties, lootings and other forms of mayhems are not recognized to be part of peaceful protests, and as such, we condemn such acts,” the organization said.
Edo Diaspora Women therefore called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to create an avenue for a responsive dialogue in order to bring this matter to a peaceful resolution.
It also called on the International communities and every other nation that support democracy, to join the Nigerian youths and the entire citizenry to bring the perpetrators of the deadly and atrocious acts to the International Criminal Court for justice.
