Edo State Police on Wednesday, paraded six suspects in connection with the gruesome murder of a female student of the University of Benin, UNIBEN, Benin City.
The victim, Uwaila Vera Omozowa, a 100 level Microbiology student of Uniben was reportedly raped and murdered inside her church in Ihovbe quarters, Benin City where she went to read, last May.
The suspects are Osabohien Nosakhare, 31, Collins Igiegbulen, 24 (prime suspect), Akhator Valentine, 29, Nelson Ogbebor, 27, Tina Samuel, 45, and Mary Addeh, 48. Other two suspects are said to be on the run.
The commissioner of police, Edo State CP Johnson Babatunde Kokumo said the suspects’ arrest was a result of discreet, intensified, hi-tech-driven and relentless investigation embarked upon by police personnel since the murder was committed last May, in Benin City.
“The matter was a great concern to the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Muhammed Adamu who sent to us here in Benin, homicide experts to work with our policemen at the state criminal investigation department.
“What we are seeing today, is a result of the uniting efforts of the police to get at the root of the crime and today, I announce to you and making public through this medium that the perpetrators have been arrested”, CP Kokumo stated.
The suspects in their various confessions, said a plank and can of fire extinguisher were used to hit the girl who died at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Benin, days after.
They alleged to have been paid by Mary Addeh to kill the girl as Osabohien Nosakhare bought the victim’s phone.
Meanwhile, students of the University of Benin have commended the police for unmasking and arresting the killers of their colleague, Uwaila Vera Omozowa.
The president, Students Union Government, SUG, UNIBEN, Comrade Egwu Benjamin gave the commendation after he led other members of his EXCO to witness the parade of the suspects at the state police command headquarters in Benin City on Wednesday.
He however promised to follow up the case in court to ensure justice is served.
