Following Alltimepost.com investigation into alleged police cover-up, Edo Police Command has assured that justice would be served in the case of a six year-old girl, reportedly defiled by her neighbor at Textile Mill road area of Benin City, with the arrest and prosecution of the suspect, one Obiyan Destiny.
The State Police Command spokesman, DSP Chidi Nwabuzor gave the assurance and update when Alltimepost.com correspondent stormed his office on Thursday.
He said the suspect has been remanded in police custody in the state capital.
DSP Nwabuzor explained that a female informant had on July 5, 2020 reported a case of defilement at Textile Mill road police division, Benin City, against one Obiyan Destiny.
According to him, operatives of the division immediately arrested the suspect whom he said confessed to the crime.
Upon preliminary investigation at the Textile Mill road police division, the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) at the state police command headquarters in Benin City on July 10, 2020.
The Police spokesman further stated that on the receipt of a medical report that the victim’s virginal wall was penetrated, the case was subsequently charged to family court 1 on August 5, 2020.
DSP Nwabuzor also explained that defilement is an offence under Section 218 of the Criminal Code, revealing further that the case is now before family court 2 since August 14, 2020.
DSP Nwabuzor however told Alltimepost.com that an old native doctor earlier arrested for complicity in the crime had his statement obtained, interrogated and released on health ground as he would be produced in court when necessary.
He said the suspect was remanded in police custody owing to the ravaging COVID-19 as he would be taken into correctional facility when certified free of the deadly virus.
Meanwhile, a man who identified himself simply as Onyema, in company of a little girl said to have been defiled, recently approached TV station in Benin City to cry for justice.
Mr. Onyema in the television interview had accused the police of truncatinghis efforts at seeking justice for his daughter.
