3 Saugus Police Officers Stabbed, Suspect Arrested

SAUGUS, MA — Three Saugus police officers were stabbed Thursday morning while attempting to investigate an unreturned U-Haul rental van, police said.

Steven Sossong, 43, of Saugus, was arrested by the officers after authorities said he stabbed them with an unidentified sharp weapon.

The officers were expected to survive. A fourth officer was evaluated at the scene with less serious injuries.

Sossong was hospitalized with minor injuries. He was expected to be arraigned later Thursday on four counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and four counts of assault and battery on a police officer.

Officers arrived at the Tuttle Street home around 7:20 a.m. to investigate the unreturned U-Haul rental, authorities said. Sossong refused to come out of the home and the officers entered, at which point there was an altercation, authorities said.

The injured officers disarmed Sossong and arrested him, authorities said.

A large police presence remained in Saugus late Thursday morning. Tuttle Street was blocked off as of 10:30 a.m.

Melrose police, Wakefield police and Massachusetts State Police responded to the scene.
