His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, Oba of Benin, has called on the global community to work out serious sanction against perpetrators of human trafficking, including the receiver countries.

The Benin Monarch made the call when he received the United States Charge d’ Affairs, David Young in his Palace during the week.

He said there seems to be high demand for trafficking persons in Europe, enabling the illegal business to thrive, pointing out that “if there is no demand, there will be no supply.”

The Oba urged the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to step into the fight against human trafficking and the rehabilitation of victims.

While assuring the United States Charge d’ Affairs of his readiness to work with them to combat the scourge of human trafficking, the Benin Monarch solicited grant to Oba Ewuare II Foundation to enable it rehabilitate the victims of human trafficking.

The Oba of Benin appreciated the United States of America for its approach to combating the scourge which includes prevention, protection and prosecution.

He used the opportunity to inform his guests that the Palace has succeeded in stamping out the activities of Community Development Association (CDA), which hitherto constituted a clog on the wheel of progress in Benin Kingdom.

Oba Ewuare II says there is a call for the return of Benin artefacts which were carted away by European, which will be used to establish Palace Museum and urged the United States Charge d’ Affair, David Young to contribute towards its realization.

Speaking earlier, the United States Charge d’ Affairs, David Young said they were in the Palace to appreciate His Royal Majesty for his pronouncement against illegal migration and human trafficking.

He described human trafficking as the most horrific human right violation all over the world, pointing out that the Omo N’Oba’s pronouncements have had great impact in bringing freedom to the victims.

Mr. David Young sought the advice of the Oba of Benin on what could be done together to combat human trafficking, pointing out that American government was ready to support in any way possible.

Mr. Young explained that those who perpetrate this crime must be brought to justice, just as he said that American government had already adopted an approach of prevention, protection and prosecution in the fight against human trafficking.
