PRISONS INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (PIMS), DESCRIBED AS A DIGITAL REVOLUTION

The Prisons Information Management System (PIMS) has been described as a digital revolution by the Rule of Law Advisor to the Vice-President of Nigeria, Dr. Fatima Waziri-Azi.

The Rule of Law Advisor made this declaration during the National Remand Indicators Project’s Stakeholders Strategy Session, preceding the official launch of the PIMS, on 14th Jan. 2019 @ Sheraton Hotel & Towers, Abuja.

While providing an overview of the objectives of the session, Dr. Waziri-Azi noted that before now, a multiplicity of information management systems from different interventions, existed in various prisons across the country.

Hence, the dire need for a harmonised digital system of data collection and management for the purpose of generating credible data in unison across all Nigerian Prisons.

She added that even though the PIMS has evolved through several stages it is necessary for the session to deliberate on the sustainability of the fields and modules designed under the database and the effective coordination between the justice sector databases.

Earlier, the Controller General of Prisons represented by ACG Operations, Garba Abubakar appreciated the present government for the several interventions that have repositioned the prisons.

He also applauded the Remand Indicators Project of the Presidency, saying it will substantially address the perennial problem of overcrowding and increasing number of pre-trial detainees in Nigerian Prisons.

The strategy session had in attendance some records and ICT officers of the Nigerian Prisons Service, the Rule of Law Advisory Team from the office of the Vice- President, NPS consultants, representatives of donor agencies, development partners, stakeholders in the criminal justice sector, as well as the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
