[dropcap]B[/dropcap]enin City – Academics activities at Evbareke Secondary School in Benin City suffered a momentary setback on Wednesday when a woman armed with a cane allegedly invaded the school and started flogging a male teacher whom she accused of spanking her son, a new student of the school.
The teacher identified as Uncle Sweet Edobor, who teaches English Studies was said to have sat down to have his breakfast about 10: am when the enraged mother allegedly unleashed violence on him.
The impact of the cane on his head damaged the medicated glasses, valued at over N14, 000 that he was wearing during the attack, according to report.
It was further gathered that students who were angered by the ugly situation attempted to mob the woman but were promptly prevented by other teachers on duty.
The student, alleged to have been spanked by the teacher was inside his classroom when his mother stormed the academic environment.
The management of the school was said to have invited police from Textile Mill road police division who swiftly arrived the school and took the woman into their custody.
It was observed that the school had closed for the day when our reporter visited at about 2:15pm on Thursday October 11, 2018.
A source in the school compound who claimed to have witnessed the aggression described it as unfortunate and called on the state government to fence the school and provide security for both the teachers and students as it could have been worse than that.
It said the action of the parent was disheartening considering the fact that the teacher was preparing the child for a better future.
The source added that the woman was earlier seen lurking around the school premises until she identified the teacher and swooped on him.
The school principal, whose name was given as Mr. Ogbeide Henry could not be reached for comments but he was said to have invited the police and ensured the rampaging woman was arrested and taken away from the school premises.
Investigation revealed that the woman identified simply as mama Victory had taken her son to start JSS one in the school, last week.
According school sources, She was yet to fulfill all the requirements for admission into JSS one when her son was allegedly flogged by the teacher during English studies lecture.
Checks further revealed that the father of the embattled student warned his wife against going to meet the teacher over the matter.
She was said to have told the police that she flogged her son’s teacher on the head to assuage the pains she suffered when she saw the wounds inflicted on her child.
Efforts to obtain reaction from the commissioner for Education, Edo State Barr. Emmanuel Agbale failed.
Contacted, the Public Relations Officer for Edo Police Command DCP Chidi Nwabuzor said he was yet to be briefed.
He however promised to get back to our Reporter, a pledge that was yet to be redeemed at press time.
