It said that while it had improved power supply from two hours in 2013 to six to 10 hours in locations with severe infrastructure limitations, customers in areas with more improved infrastructure enjoyed between 12 to 15 hours.
The company, which also covers Delta, Ondo and Ekiti States, made this known while reacting to allegations of poor electricity supply levelled against it by Governor Godwin Obaseki.
Obaseki had during the 4th National Council on Power meeting on June 26, accused the Disco of failing to meet the expectations of the residents, over-billing its customers and refusing to provide pre-paid meters.
Obaseki had also accused the company of allegedly frustrating a power deal with Ossiomo Power and Infrastructure Company Limited to supply electricity to government offices in the state capital.
But the BEDC, in a statement by its Head of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Tayo Adekunle, said, “On the issue of poor power supply, BEDC distributes power as the last mile of the power sector value chain. It takes its allocation of nine per cent from the grid and gives the highest share of 40 per cent to Edo State.
“Power supply has improved considerably, including supply to Edo State Government offices, street lights and top government officials. BEDC has added a total of 1,694 distribution transformers to ensure power supply improvement since the new management takeover in 2013.”
The distribution company disclosed that it had connected 12 communities to the grid while 16 communities had had their transformers replaced.
It alsso said that it had achieved over 65 per cent metering of its customers even as the National Electricity Regulatory Commission had introduced a new process of using third parties as meter asset providers to accelerate the metering process.
