Breaking: School Principal Murdered In Benin

Benin City – Rampaging gunmen suspected to be cultists last weekend murdered a retired school principal in Benin City.

The deceased Mr. Igbagbon Lugard Omoruyi, 61was shot to death at his private residence located at 21, Aiyobahan Street, off Adolor College Road Ugbowo, Benin City on Saturday June 2, 2018.

The gunmen said to be seven in number invaded their victim’s home about 7:43pm, robbed his wife and son of phones, money and other valuables before opening fire on him in his sitting room where he was watching television.

They were said to have shot sporadically into the air during and after the operation obviously to scare away possible challenge from anywhere.

When our reporter visited the scene on Tuesday June 5, 2018, sympathisers besieged the premises, calling on the police and relevant authorities to ensure justice is served on the perpetrators.

It was gathered that late Igbagbon Lugard Omoruyi was a Mathematics teacher for many years at different secondary schools in Edo State before he was promoted to the rank of principal and posted to Umaza Junior Secondary School in Ovia South West local government area of the state, where he retired last February.

The deceased was said to have bagged a PhD at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) before his retirement.

He was expecting his pension and gratuity when the tragedy struck.

The Public Relations Officer for Edo Police Command DSP Chidi Nwabuzor said a suspect had been arrested in connection with the killing of the retired principal.

DSP Nwabuzor however assured that justice would be served in the case as full scale investigation had commenced as other fleeing suspects would soon be apprehended.
