Benin City, Nigeria – Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has said the complimentary roles of alma maters are a veritable catalyst for the development of education in Nigeria, praising Eghosa Anglican Grammar School Old Boys Association (EGHOBA) for its scholarship award to thirty indigent students of the institution.
Obaseki made the remarks in Benin City recently, while speaking as a special guest of honor at the Scholarship Presentation and Commissioning of the computer lab tables, chairs and equipment for forty students of Eghosa Anglican Grammar School, Benin City, donated by the Chicago, U.S.A. chapter of the school’s Old Boys Association.
Other Awards Donors at the event included: Dr. Charles Omosigho (Dr. Charles Omosigho Scholarship Fund); Mr. Alex Osunde (Chief A.B.C. Scholarship Fund); EGHOBA, Lagos (EGHOBA Lagos Scholarship Fund) and Sir Moses Aroko (Prizes for Pupils and Teachers).
Governor Obaseki praised the donors of the Scholarships, prizes and the computers Lab room who are old boys of Eghosa Anglican Grammar School for their kind gesture, urging others to emulate them.
The Governor, an old boy of the school, was represented at the occasion by Chief Oseni Elamah, immediate past Chairman of Edo State Internal Revenue, who also was a the guest speaker.
Elamah spoke on the relevance of giving back to alma mater, asserting that giving back goes a long way to support scholarships for deserving indigent pupils and also to encourage the students to do well in their studies.
According to Chief Elamah, who is also an old boy of the school, there can be no better way to develop “our former school than to give back and show practical example.”
He used the occasion to offer financial support to all the pupils sitting for the next NECO examination, and also gave prizes to the best male and female teacher.
The chairman of the Scholarship Committee and President of EGHOBA, Chicago branch, Mr. Osagie Igbinosun, who spoke on behalf of other members of the Committee, including Mr. Egbon Ehigie, Barr. Henry Omoregie and George Omogun, said the gesture was one sure way of giving back to their alma mater.
Mr. Igbinosun wholeheartedly thanked the donors for their humanitarian spirit and prayed God to bless them. He also thanked Governor Obaseki for his support and urged all old boys or chapters to reach out to the Scholarship Committee members to donate towards the Scholarship Fund.
The School Principal, Rev. Osakue Edokpolo, appealed to the committee to consider including best Edo Language students next time in choosing winners of scholarship award.
The Chairman of the occasion, Rtd. Col. Paul Ihianle who doubled as President of EGHOBA, Lagos branch, noted with satisfaction that old boys have continued to contribute significantly to the uplift of their former school.
He urged other individuals or groups to join the Scholarship Fund and thanked the old boys for attending the Scholarship presentation ceremony.
The occasion represented a day of joy, celebrations, highlighted by cultural display to welcome dignitaries to Eghosa Anglican Grammar School Hall during the award ceremony.
The award included Scholarships to indigent pupils, prizes for the best English Language and Mathematics pupils and best male and female teacher.
Several dignitaries attended the ceremony, among whom were, Prince Ekperiebe Akenzua, Former Deputy Chief of Staff to Edo State Deputy Governor, Dr. Pius Odubu; Justice M. O. Ighodalo, High Court Judge; Benin Palace representative, Mr. Donald Osemwingie and Mr. Francis Edosomwan from Boston, USA.
Kudos Eghoba Chicago for the scholarships. It will go a long way to advancing the education of the indigent pupils.
