Recent online media report that the Ayobahan of Benin Kingdom, Chief John Osamede Adun was demoted by the Benin Monarch, Omo N’ Oba N’ Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare Ogidigan II has been debunked by the Benin Palace.
The news medium (not Alltimepost.com) had reported that Chief Osamede was degraded from number 4th to 14th position within the Palace hierarchy of chiefs, following a verdict passed against him by the Oba in favor of another chief, the Iyase of Udo.
Upon contact for confirmation on Monday November 28, 2016, following the break of the news, the Secretary to the Benin Traditional Council (BTC), Mr. Frank Irabor told Alltimepost.com that the story was not correct. “It is not correct”, he said.
According to him, there was a misunderstanding between Chief Adun and the Iyase of Udo and that the issue was resolved without punishment meted out to anyone. “No one was sanctioned,” he stated categorically.
Pressed to give details on the issue, Mr. Irabor was not willing to go further before the line got disconnected.
Meanwhile, Chief Osamede Adun, in a rebuttal made available to newsmen in Benin on Monday described the said publication as false, unfounded and a calculated attempt to smear his name.
Chief Adun said that he had filed a formal complaint with Edo State Commissioner of Police for necessary action against the alleged perpetrators of the falsehood.
The following is the full text of his rebuttal as it was released to the press:
THE ATTENTION OF THE AYOBAHAN OF BENIN KINGDOM, CHIEF DR. JOHN OSAMEDE ADUN (JP) HAS BEEN DRAWN TO AN ONLINE MEDIA REPORT WHICH SAYS THE OBA OF BENIN, OBA EWUARE II HAS DEMOTED CHIEF JOHN OSAMEDE ADUN FROM NO. 4 IN THE PALACE CHIEFTAINCY HIERARCHY TO NO. 14.
LET IT BE PUBLICLY KNOWN THAT THE ONLINE REPORT IS FALSE, UNFOUNDED AND A CALCULATED ATTEMPT TO SMEAR THE NAME OF CHIEF JOHN ADUN.
IT IS MY BELIEF THAT THE REPORT IS THE IMAGINATION OF THE WRITER AND A PAID MOVE TO RIDICULE THE AYOBAHAN OF BENIN WHO IS EXTREMELY AND ETERNALLY LOYAL TO THE OBA OF BENIN, OBA EWUARE II. HOWEVER, THE ORIGINATOR OF THE WRITE-UP HAS BEEN IDENTIFIED.
A FORMAL PETITION OF FALSE ALARM, FALSE INFORMATION, FALSE ALLEGATION AND CRIMINAL DEFAMATION AGAINST THOSE WHO ORCHESTRATED THE WRITE-UP HAS BEEN WRITTEN TO THE EDO STATE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE FOR NECESSARY ACTION.
MEMBERS OF THE PUBLIC ARE HEREBY ADVISED TO DISREGARD THE SAID ONLINE PUBLICATION AND SPECULATION.
