BOSTON– Events are scheduled throughout the city on Friday to mark the third anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombings with “One Boston Day.”
One Boston Day, which Mayor Marty Walsh proclaimed will now be an annual event, began with a wreath laying ceremony on Boylston Street.
The wreaths were placed at the locations where the bombs went off in 2013 near the marathon finish line.
Krystle Campbell, Martin Richard and Lingzi Lu were killed during the bombings and MIT Officer Sean Collier was killed in the manhunt for the bombers.
Martin Richard’s father joined a member of Lu’s family to lay a wreath at Marathon Sports and Gov. Charlie Baker placed another wreath outside the old Forum restaurant with the help of Campbell’s father.
A moment of silence will take place throughout Boston at 2:49 p.m. as church bells ring throughout the city to mark the exact time the first bomb exploded.
One Boston Day “encourages random acts of kinds and spreading of goodwill” in an effort to give back to the community that was unified in the aftermath of the bombings.
Among the community service events in Boston is sneaker drive run by John Hancock. a Brigham and Women’s Hospital blood drive in Copley Square, and a City Hall collection of pre-mixed baby formula, baby wipes and hand sanitizer to be donated to Flint, Mich.
According to the One Boston Day website, nearly 6,000 acts of kindness have been pledged for Friday.
