World Teachers Day: Ex-Gov. Osunbor Calls For Increased Education Budget

By Oladipo Airenakho

Former Edo State Governor, Professor Osahienmen Osunbor has enjoined government at all levels in Nigeria to improve their budget for education.

He made the appeal on Monday at the World Teachers Day celebration held at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State.

Professor Osunbor who was intermittently applauded at the venue by teachers in recognition of his contributions to their welfare during his short stint as governor of the state said it was important that the three tiers of government recognize the strategic roles of teachers in the society and do that which is right by giving them priority in their budget for education.

Children of Nigeria, he continued, depend on the quality of the instructions and training they receive from their teachers and as such their capacity to function optimally should not be negotiable.

“The Nigerian society must continuously recognize the role of teachers and respect them, Professor Osunbor said.

“If you look at the developed countries of the world you will find that their budget for education is always the highest.

So I want to see a situation where the budget in Nigeria for education not only receives very high attention but also cater adequately for teachers,” he concluded.
