ABUJA – Following Nigeria’s Last Saturday successful Presidential and National Assembly elections, culminating in retired Major-General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress as the nation’s new president-elect, the Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) has reminded the former Military ruler of his promise to fight corruption in the country.
The executive Director of the organization, Rev. David Ugolor in a reaction to the election in Abuja on Wednesday commended Nigerians for giving the democratic process a chance to succeed, while tasking the in-coming president on corruption and good governance.
ANEEJ noted that there were many corruption cases like the Pension Scam, the Subsidy Fraud, and other scandals which the outgoing administration handled with kid gloves and which led to its eventual fall.
“Relevant draft laws like the Petroleum Industry Bill, PIB, were relegated to the background and rampant cases of oil theft portrayed the Goodluck Jonathan administration as an accomplice to the crimes.
“General Buhari ran a campaign slogan premised on the fight to tame corruption and entrench the rule of law,” Ugolor said.
“We want to encourage the General to keep to his campaign promises for the sake of justice, equity, good governance, peace building and conflict resolution.
He should work assiduously to end the indexes of poverty and corruption which helped insurgency to grow in the North-East. He should empower Nigerians to build a country we would all be proud of.”
Rev. Ugolor expressed pleasure at the peaceful conduct of the election, saying: “ANEEJ is pleased to note that the expected outbreak of violence did not occur.
“There were doomsday predictions that Nigeria would disintegrate immediately after the elections because of violence and political intolerance.
“But the congratulatory message from Dr. Goodluck Jonathan conceding victory to his opponent has doused the palpable tension that gripped Nigerians.
“There can never be any time than now than this for the incoming president to hit the ground running,” David Ugolor said.
