Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ) has commended President Goodluck Jonathan for debunking speculations that his government had orchestrated a plan to fire the nation’s electoral chief, Dr. Attahiru Jega.
The Organization’s Executive Director, Mr. David Ugolor delivered the commendation in Abuja recently while commenting on the president’s assurance that he would vacate office if he loses in the forthcoming presidential election, slated for March 28, 2015.
“ANEEJ wishes to commend Mr. President for his candor and statesmanlike position on the rumors that made the rounds about the sack of the INEC Chairman.”
‘We are however concerned that INEC should not use this as an excuse to relax its grip on the confidence that Mr. President has expressed in the ability of INEC to conduct a free, fair and credible polls’, Ugolor said.
INEC chairman had been in the eye of the storm since the postponement of the presidential elections initially slated for February 14 by six weeks.
Opposition parties and major stakeholders, such as ANEEJ had expressed worry that Professor Jega’s sack in the wake of the forth-coming elections would derail the election process and give room for anarchy.
ANEEJs seek to contribute to the emergence of a just and equitable African society through socio-economic and environmental rights protection, institutional strengthening and people’s empowerment.
