Nasarawa: APC Lawmaker To Drag Party To Court Over Nomination

The minority leader at the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Tanko Adamu Maikatako has concluded plans to stop his party, the All Progressives Congress, APC, from presenting any candidate for Lafia Central Constituency in the February 28 House of Assembly election in the state. The lawmaker is currently representing the constituency.

According to Maikatako, the APC imposed a candidate on the party, and announced result for an exercise that did not hold.

It will be recalled that the December 2 primary election at Lafia City Hall was disrupted during accreditation, when angry youths stormed the venue to protest an announcement on the radio that one of the six aspirants was disqualified. The party however announced one of the contenders, Imam Zanwa, as the winner.

The minority leader said he was disappointed by the way the party treated the several petitions that trailed its action.

“The national secretariat told us (petitioners), when we met in Abuja, that the governor (Umaru Tanko Al-Makura) had interest in the report. They said the report was not going to favour us, with that kind of interest.

They asked us to return and see if we can get the governor to understand the implication of allowing the party to get away with this kind of injustice,” Maikatako said.

He said he has concluded plans to go to court to challenge the action and seek a declaration that “the party cannot participate in the election for Lafia-Central because it did not conduct primary election in the constituency.”

Those who signed the petition to the party’s national secretariat included Maikatako, Suleiman Wambai, Hamidu Abdul, Abdullahi Yahaya and Iliya Mainoma.

The Spokesman of the APC in the state, Abubakar Hassan confirmed that five of the six contestants petitioned the announcement of Imam Zanwa as winner, but insisted that primary election took place.(Daily Post)
