A gang of attackers has beheaded a 90-year-old community leader, Goodluck Uwumahongie, at Aruogba village in Oredo local government area of Edo State over land squabble.
The attackers who were said to have shot their victim before decapitating him, made away with the head of the deceased.
Late Uwumahongie was murdered at Irhirhi village where he fled to with his family after crisis broke out at Aruogba village. The community Youth Chairman, Okoro Obaretin, and two others have been killed since the crisis erupted in November last year with several houses razed.
The murderers of Uwumahongie scaled the fence into his compound at about 5pm before perpetrating the act.
According to 55-year old Julie who is a spouse to the deceased, she was told of the murder of her husband around 5:30pm on the fateful day. She added that her spouse was killed over tussle for the community land.
She said that, “One Osamwonyi has earlier threatened to kill my husband before the crisis. After we ran away from the village during the crisis to seek refuge at my father’s village at Irhirhi, Osamwonyi saw him here and said he would still kill him.”
“I was told that my husband was killed brutally. He was killed because of land tussle.
They have been fighting over the community land. He said my husband joined the other faction against them. People said he was shot before they cut off his head and took the head away. I hid my husband in my father’s house. Nobody was at home when it happened.”
The Police Public Relations Officer in Edo State, Joseph Edogiawerie, who confirmed the murder, informed that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the act.(Daily Post)
