BENIN CITY –The victims of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS) recruitment exercise held march 15, 2014 have cried out to the government and well meaning Nigerians saying that eight months after the Federal Government was yet to fulfill its promise to them.
It will be recalled that after the nationwide exercise which was marred by stampede and trauma that led to the death of several persons many others injured President Goodluck Jonathan had promised automatic employment as a compensation to different categories of victims.
Some of the victims who were on peaceful protest to the corporate headquarters of the Bendel Newspapers Company Limited, Publishers of the observer titles recently lamented that they were yet to hear from either the federal government or the NIS, despite all efforts made so far.
The victims who alleged that there were plans by top officials to substitute their names for the automatic employment, described it as “injustice in highest level”.
Austine Amu Ozimede who lost his wife, Sandra to the incident described as pathetic, the impact the death of his wife had brought to bear in the family.
He lamented situation he passed through to be able to tend for the children left behind by his late wife.
Aigbogun Adesuwa, said the presidency was yet to fulfill the promise of immediate employment to the victims, hence they embarked on the peaceful protest to press home their demand as well as draw public attention to their plight.
It does not sound well at all that some persons are trying to substitute our names with other persons because it has been rough for me and my family since the incident”, said Adesuwa.
On his part, Timothy Omoagbor stated that the memory of incident will linger in his memory.
It was a traumatic experience that will forever be remembered; we have gone to Immigration Command and what they keep telling us is that they have not heard from the Federal Government.
He are appealing to the relevant authorities to come to our aid”, Omoagbor had said.
Another victim, Angela Ekechukwu, said A committee was set up to facilitate the immediate employment of the victims and up till date, we have not heard of any positive result. It seems we have been totally neglected”.
The victims who carried plancards with inscription: we are Immigration victims, please help us, seven months after, we are still waiting, however appealed to President Goodluck to reconsider his earlier promise to them.
