The Rivers State Government said on Friday that President Goodluck Jonathan had released the sum of N200m promised by the Federal Government as part of its contribution to the fight against the Ebola virus disease in the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Samson Parker, who disclosed this to journalists, on Friday, in Port Harcourt, expressed the state government’s appreciation of the Federal Government’s gesture.
He said, “We thank President Jonathan for graciously releasing the N200 million he promised to give to the state to assist us in tackling Ebola. We have received the money.”
Parker said although Rivers State had won the battle against Ebola, the war was not yet over.
He further said, “Ebola was still ravaging Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. With what we are hearing that is happening in other parts of the world, the ocean cannot stop EVD from travelling.
“And so, we have to redouble our efforts this time around in the areas of vigilance, surveillance and monitoring. Our treatment centre here is still open. The operations centre is still on. Surveillance is still going on. Point of entry are still being monitored. Screening is still going on.”
The commissioner admonished Nigerians to be more vigilant as Christmas and the New Year approach.
“As Nigerians and Africans, we are all aware that some of our brothers and sisters will be coming back home, either healthy or unhealthy. So, that is why we must continue our efforts in sensitisation campaign,” he added.
