Nigeria has been described as a nation united in diversity, where everyone will be able to realize his or her potentials.
Nigeria’s Deputy Defense Attaché in the United States of America, Colonel Julius Ehioze Osifo made this assertion in his introductory remarks at the celebration of the country’s 54th years of nationhood which took place at the Nigerian Embassy in Washington D.C. on Wednesday October 1, 2014.
“Today being Oct 1 2014, we celebrate 54 years as a sovereign nation having gotten independence in the year 1960. Our indigenous efforts in the past 54 years have been marked by many triumphs and tribulations, many opportunities and challenges,” he recalled.
In spite of it all, he remarked, Nigerians everywhere, its friends and allies were united by one common resolve; namely to build a virile, strong and egalitarian nation.

Colonel Osifo reflected more on the nation’s journey so far, saying “100 years ago, the British colonial officers took the first step in the process of building a great nation when they amalgamated what was then the Northern and Southern protectorates of the River Niger. That century old amalgamation became the foundation stone of what is today the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
Col. Osifo welcomed dignitaries to the occasion and remarked that their presence was a manifestation of their belief in project Nigeria, “willingness and enthusiasm to participate in the process of building our great nation.”
